About Us

Catherine and Phil would like to welcome you to The Toll House Bed and Breakfast.  We took over the running of the B&B in June 2016 and are excited about putting our own personal touch on this long established guesthouse to ensure all our visitors have a wonderful and relaxing stay.

The Toll House B&B, Newport, Essex

The Toll House has been run as a successful B&B for many years. We wish to continue this very English tradition and provide our guests with quality, comfortable accommodation in a warm and welcoming atmosphere at very competitive rates.  Providing a quality, satisfying breakfast using first class ingredients is top of our priorities - whether it be a hearty full English or Continental, we aim to cater for all diets and tastes.  Catherine has followed a strict diet for health reasons for a number of years and for this reason, is extremely keen to provide choice and variety for the ever increasing number of people who eat restricted or specific diets.

We are both keen on travel ourselves and are looking to use our experience from our trips around the world to offer what we were looking for in accommodation; homely, comfortable rooms  coupled with a friendly, personal service where nothing is too much trouble.

The Historic Toll House of Newport

The Toll House dates back over 300 years and was originally the official residence of the Toll Keeper. This was a very important role within the village community. It would have been his job to collect the toll or payment from the traders who used the bridge to cross their livestock and carts over the River Wicken on their way to and from the market town of Saffron Walden. The original toll charge notice is in the Saffron Walden museum but we have retained a replica on the front of the Toll House. It clearly shows the tariff for taking a mule horse or gelding. It is a popular photo opportunity with many of the walkers who make the most of the beautiful countryside around Newport.
